The Caprivi region is located in the far north-east region of Namibia and is the least developed region of the country. Unfortunately the Caprivi region has experienced a high rise in illnesses and deaths due to the spread of HIV. The people believe that witchcraft is the cause of the HIV and other illnesses. Witchcraft for a long time has been associated with misfortune such as bad school grades, car accidents, and death.

Illnesses and deaths that are believed to be cause by witchcraft are difficult to cure because witchcraft has grown to become increasingly powerful. Some withcraft forms can result in a quick death or manifest into a long-term illness for years. People who have been witched or have family members that they believe have been witched use that as a mechanism to believe that whatever illness they have is curable or manageable instead of choosing to believe that they contracted the illness themselves. Witchcraft is used as coping strategy when someone is ill which then results in that person not receiving the proper care and help.

It is said that witchcraft can affect all people but is considered as a big problem towards the economically productive age group. This age group is known to be educated and to own their own assets which can cause jealously that leads to accusations of witchcraft.
